This is Behind the Mind, your official backstage pass to the Mind of Mencia giving you a behind the scenes glimpse of the show. Today's edition: The Birth of Carlosauras Rex!

Here is the story of how Carlos the Dinosaur came to be as told by the shows Costumer.

"Season 1 everybody wanted to do a Barney the Dinosaur parody, and after doing some research as to why I couldn't find ANY purple dinosaur-esque costume for rent ANYWHERE, I learned that the company that owns the copyright to Barney is militant about his likeness being used-people can't even have a Barney the Dinosaur impersonator appear at a child's party.

So...we begin frantically calling around, when we find a company in Mexico that says they have a brown dinosaur costume...of course I could not see a photo so I crossed my fingers and sent an assistant to drive 6 hours round trip to Mexico to pick up this unknown item that was due to play before a live studio audience the very next day.

It arrives...it is great!  Except...it is a closed head and of course we need to see Carlos' face!  After all, he is the host of the show.  So with hours to go before the audience comes in I take a hacksaw and a can of black spray paint-and cut out 2 triangular shaped pieces from the end of a 2x4 to wedge the mouth of the dino head open so we can see Carlos' face.  Carlos almost gets high from the paint fumes as he performs in the costume.  Cut to season 3, and Carlosaurus Rex is back for an encore-you will notice when you see the costume reappear this season, the Frankenstein job we did season 1 has been attended to and Carlosaurus Rex now looks as if he was born that way.  And am I the only one who appreciates that Carlosaurus Rex is brown like a Mexican?????"
