All the way to Reno...

Some of you might recognize the title...it's in an awesome REM song. I love that band.

This weekend, Mencia and company (me included) flew to Reno to perform at the Silver Legacy Casino. When we arrived, I noticed that Kanye West was going to play there too a week after us. I wish I could make that show. I love me some Kanye.

When we arrived, we were all hungry and went to eat at Cafe Sedona in the casino. It was at that point that Mencia and I began a discussion about stand-up comedy. I love these kind of talks. We started reminiscing about how I started working with him three years ago.

It's an interesting story. I was working as the office manager for the Addison IMPROV. Let's face it, the title basically states I was a glorified secretary. My duties included answering phones, selling tickets, doing the graphic design stuff for the ads we would do for upcoming comedians. I worked there for a little over two years.

At the Addison IMPROV, I bumped into the most awesome comedians. People like Jim Gaffigan, Dave Attell, Jim Florentine, Kathleen Madigan; well the list goes on.

On one of the visits, I met Mencia. It was very soon after I had started doing stand-up. We talked in one of his visits and when he found out that I was trying to do stand-up, he asked me if I wanted to do a set. I said no. I was too young at that point; I was doing open mics around Dallas, at this point, still hoping to become a weekend regular at the Backdoor Comedy Club. I was afraid of bombing (that means sucking much). It wasn't a year later when he came back and saw the graphic design stuff I had done for him with the IMPROV that he offered me a job designing his emails (years ago). I said yes because I needed the extra income.

It was in this week, that he asked me to do a set. I accepted and went up to do 5-7 minutes. I did ok. I remember when I came down from the stage, he asked me if I wanted to open for him in San Antonio at the Rivercenter Comedy Club. I said yes. After San Antonio, he asked me to work with him in El Paso; I did that too. Then Austin. It was in Austin, at Cap City, that he offered me work as his opener. I JUMPED ON THE CHANCE. He helped me with my move to LA and I started working with him right away.

Three years later, we're still friends and I guess this past weekend with our chat at Cafe Sedona, I realized how far I've come...but also, how much farther I need to go. Just thought I'd share this story because it's something that I think shows a side to him that not many get to see and that is part of what makes the Mind of Mencia.

By the way, the show was great, the crowds were awesome. Reno would've been cooler though if I hadn't lost money on blackjack.
